Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 5 Days Trek Itinerary

Day 1 – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Trekking Time : 4–5 hours
  • Altitude : 1,870 m → 2,700 m
  • Climate : Rainforest, humid and cool

  • Register at Marangu Gate
  • Walk through dense rainforest
  • Spot colobus monkeys and tropical birds
  • Overnight at Mandara Hut

Day 2 – Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Trekking Time : 5–6 hours
  • Altitude : 2,700 m → 3,720 m
  • Climate : Moorland, cooler and windy

  • Leave the rainforest zone
  • Open views of Mawenzi Peak
  • Walk through heather and grasslands
  • Overnight at Horombo Hut

Day 3 – Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Trekking Time : 5–6 hours
  • Altitude : 3,720 m → 4,703 m
  • Climate : Alpine desert, cold and dry

  • Cross the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo
  • Sparse vegetation and wide open terrain
  • Early dinner and rest for summit night
  • Overnight at Kibo Hut

Day 4 – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

  • Trekking Time : 10–14 hours
  • Altitude : 4,703 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m
  • Climate : Freezing summit, cold descent

  • Midnight summit attempt
  • Reach Gilman’s Point at sunrise
  • Continue to Uhuru Peak
  • Descend back to Horombo Hut
  • Overnight at Horombo Hut

Day 5 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Altitude : 3,720 m → 1,870 m
  • Climate : Warm rainforest

  • Final descent through moorland and forest
  • Collect summit certificates
